Hello all,
In a series of conversations leading up to the convention there was an expressed need for some sort of safer space (for women, trans, queer, POC etc) at the convergence space. Because different groups identify different needs in terms of what makes a space “safer,” the safer space working group decided to create a rotating safer space that can be signed out by different groups (formal or ad hoc) who need a place to decompress/dialog etc. We recognize that a small room in the convergence space does little to address the persistence of systemic oppression in our movements or in the world at large, but we are limited by time and resources in what we are able to do here. We hope that in some small way this space can contribute positively to our collective experiences here at the rnc and build our capacity for resistance in all its forms.
logistics:
- the default for the safer space will be the side room on stage right, which will be available for sign out at all times except for during the spokes councils. This is a fairly small space, but one of the few places in the c-space with a door that closes.
- if a larger space is needed it will be possible to sign up for the stage on the second floor, but availability will be a bit more limited and require some advanced notice
- it is also possible for groups to sign up for space downstairs, either during the spokes councils or for easier accessibility. unfortunately this space is not particularly private or enclosed.
guidelines:
- this space was created with the intention of addressing issues around systemic and institutional oppression, and we ask that people be respectful of this intent. if you want to do strategizing with your affinity group or have a meetup for dolphin enthusiasts, please schedule other space.
- we are scheduling the space in two hour blocs.
- priority will be given to groups who have used the space less.
how to schedule:
- before the 29th email convergencespace@riseup.net
- after the 29th talk to whoever is staffing the convergence space to schedule a time.
thanks!
